How Beauty and the Beast Became a Polish Folktale: Folklorization, Rewriting, and the Disney Effect
Beauty and the Beast offers an intriguing example of the complex relationship between literary and oral traditions. Unlike many tales that entered literary culture through collections of oral narratives, the story reached Poland in the eighteenth century as a translation of Mme Leprince de Beaumont’s literary tale. During the nineteenth century, however, it entered oral circulation and underwent a process of folklorization. Variants recorded by Polish folklorists transformed the setting, characters, motifs and narrative logic of the French original, adapting the story to local storytelling traditions.
The lecture will trace this process and its subsequent reversal. Once recorded and published, some of these variants were incorporated into collections of “Polish fairy tales” and became material for new literary and theatrical adaptations. Thus, a foreign literary tale was gradually transformed into what could be perceived as part of Polish traditional culture. Finally, the lecture will consider how this plurality of competing versions was largely displaced after 1991 by the global dominance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
